Port to MySQL Underway
by Kenneth Richards - Thursday, May 20, 2004
from the Development dept.

I prefer MySQL over Microsoft Access due to it's ability to store large amounts of data and remarkable stability. It doesn't come packaged with a nice GUI interface like Access (but I'm sure there are some third-party applications that provide this functionality.) You can do all of your database administration from the command line (DOS prompt in windows) so it's not that big of a deal.

Early development has been promising and we already have ASP Nuke up and running on a development server. We are just going in and cleaning up the last few remaining bugs before completing the newest release. Expect this to be released soon as version 0.75.

There is going to be a minor performance hit because the MySQL windows database drivers require you to go through ODBC to access the database. This won't really be a problem unless you are getting massive hits on your site.

The next port after this database will be for the Access database. Beyond that, I don't plan on doing any other database ports for this application. I know there are lots of other great databases out there such as PostgreSQL and Oracle and hopefully the modular architecture will allow some enterprising person to submit a patch to add this support.
